Seeking technical help!

Okay, my idea.
I need help. I've reached my limits with setting up this board - my knowledge just plain doesn't go any farther. I need technical help so that I can run this danged site! There are lots of things we'd like to do to make this site more fun for our members and help it grow, but I don't know how to carry those plans out.

Does anyone know how to... oh, for example... make "www.thetriopsforum.com" redirect to the portal page, then make the portal page look nicer and more inviting, with banners for AquaRank and a remote chat room, and announcements about new contests? Or how about making a "library" to hold stickied articles? Or maybe putting together a nice little segment of the portal to hold links to the stickied articles?

Please help! You'll get to be a site Admin and have your username in red and everything. :clareandjuleerule:

Thanks! Keep in mind that we'll be giving complete administrative privileges to whoever is doing this, so if you do get a response, please make sure that they're trustworthy. :) I may also be getting help from a friend of mine when classes start next week.

Hello,

Was reading a topic started on a site I administrate and decided to stop by and give some advice.

fist Let me say that if you have users going out to other Tech Sites and posting about you needing help, you should really advise them to read the site rules first to make sure that they are not breaking other site rules. I can see that the topic created at Computer Forum.com has already been deleted due to it breaking the rules. The same thing almost happened at my site as well along with the member being banned for spam.

Most sites have strict rules about spamming. If you are sending out people, or they are doing it under their own accord, they need to follow those site rules when asking for help. There should not be multiple links to your site in the opening post. ThaBest1 is lucky that I did not just ban them once I saw the topic and remove all their posts from my site. When it is stated no links to sites unless they are in your signature is a clear enough statement to everyone that links should not be posted unless asked for.

Computer Forum.com has the same rule. You cant promote your own site on their site. Hence why the topic was removed as fast as it was posted. I only removed the links. That is the only reason why it is left on my site.

Now with that tidbit over, sadly there isnt much that people will be able to do for you. You are on a free board running IPB 1.3. You dont have core access to the server to modify files as you see fit, you only have access to the ACP to make changes. You can redirect the main site if you have a portal and it is active via IPB ACP, but if not then you are stuck using only what they provide you with.

Not to mention if you want help, this means trusting a complete stranger to have access to your ACP and your site as a whole. I worked with IPB forums for many years, but I have been using vB for many years now as well. My recent activity is with vB. I cant remember everything in IPB and would need to see it to tell you what can or cant be done. So as you can see asking for help is a tedious task, cause it will require trust.

If you ever decide to move to your own host and get your own real forum, then there are support techs that can help. but really using a free site with free hosting you have to trust people to help, not sure if that really helps or hurts, but it is what it is.

First off, I didn't ask my members to solicit help from other sites. If you'd read this topic, you'd have seen that.

Second, I already said that I'm aware that I would have to trust the person to whom I'm giving administrative power. That's why I asked HERE, at MY forum, since I was hoping to get responses from folks who have been posting here for a while and clearly have the site's best interests in mind.

Please don't give unsolicited advice without actually reading the topic at hand, and please don't blame me for the problems you're having with your own forum's members.
