Okay, my idea.

Are you considering declawing your cat? If so, please weigh the pros and cons before you make this decision. Pros: -Your cat will not be able to scratch your furniture or people. Cons: -Your cat may attempt to mark its territory by urinating on furniture since it can no longer scratch. -Your cat may become aggressive and bite people because it feels defenseless without its claws, although it may never have felt the need to scratch them. -Your cat may become excessively timid, and perhaps never come out of closets or from under the bed. -Your cat may suffer from chronic pain due to severed nerve endings or altered gait. -Your cat may stop using the litterbox because litter can feel painful to declawed paws. -Your cat may hold a grudge against you and never be as affectionate as before. -Your cat may become overweight, since exercise is more difficult for a declawed cat. -Your cat may suffer from other chronic health problems due to an altered gait, especially back and hip troubles. -Your cat may suffer from fourth-degree burns or bone splinters left behind in his or her paws, or even a deadly infection. -And if that doesn't have you convinced, declaw surgery is extremely expensive, running as high as $500 at some clinics. Videos on declawing: Declawing: Open your eyes to the truth Kona - Crippled by declawing Ban Declawing! Cat Declaw Surgery Warning about the last video - GRAPHIC!!! For some reason, that video was supposed to make people feel better about declawing. It just made me feel sick. I have assisted in numerous spay-neuter clinics and seen all the blood and guts, but this was something else. It's super-easy after a little practice. It can take a cat some time to get used to it, and it may always be a two-person project (one person holding the cat, one person trimming), but it's entirely worth it. Astrid's behavior and life are normal, and a few minutes out of my week and a one-time cost of $5 for clippers are no big deal for me. If you still feel that you must have a declawed cat or if your landlord requires it and won't budge on the topic, please consider adopting a cat that has already been declawed. That way, you get the declawing, but no more cats have to suffer. |

I approve of this message- I have three girls, two of whom my mother declawed and one I was old enough to tell her she wasn't allowed to. The differences in their behaviors are amazing. Both girls who were declawed are terrified of people and refuse to use the litter box. Just some food for thought. |

This thread on another forum brings up studies and scholarly backup for the anti-declawing stance: http://www.ultimatebettas.com/index.php?showtopic=61838&st=0 |

Nope, Soft Paws are a great alternative. They're listed in the "alternatives" section.
