My girlfriend took a bunch of pictures of the critters doing their thing tonight. I think they came out realy well. :D

This is their natural color, with the greenish sheen, which is actually under the carapace. It does not appear to be algae. They are only pure silver right after molting.

Posted Image
Bubble Head. Oldest, but smaller than the rest due to her wardrobe-malfunction. Her carapace is also less elongated than that of the rest. She never has the green sheen.

Thanks for all the kudos, guys and gals. ;)

Triops ar hard to photograph, as they barely hold still for even a second. By the time you get your focus they're gone again. The pics you see here are the best from about 60 shots taken.

My favorite is the one that clearly shows the eggs.

The one where they dig doesn't really do the critters justice. They go in spurts, were they dig for a couple of seconds like a speed-machine and throw sand all over, and then leasurely deposit the eggs. Quite a sight to behold! ^_^

v369, is that what these plants are called, "vals"? They look like grass to me, but are the only ones that didn't die and didn't cause murking of the water. I also like the fact that the Triops don't eat them (at least not when they are well fed) but do strip them of algae. :)

They look like some species of Vallisneria to me.
They are great water plants, usualy pretty sturdy.
most vals are tolereant of a variety of water parameters,
some prefer hard water though.they usualy need a moderate ammount of light to thrive.

If you find that their not vals pleas let me know, I like the way they look.
I think I will have to try some with my next batch of triops.

This is not the most detailed overview of vals but will give a good base:

v369, yes these are exactly the plants I have. Very hardy. They reproduce through shooters.

Carnifex, I assume they are Longicaudatus. I got them from this kit:

I jut made a clip (same crappy camera and skills) of the critters recovering in their holding tanks. I am keeping Bubble Head separate -- with the two snails -- as she is half the size of the others. She has only now started showing signs of a slight green sheen.

The clip clearly shows the bluish-green coloring and their deep red under sides.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0voHOQWH5o

The color in the clip is actual and shows exactly what they look like.

The snails I have are somewhat translucent brown with black spots and flecks. Any idea what kind of snail this might be?

yes, that kit has longicaudatus.

Its also the kit both Ducky and I cannot hatch triops from. It is ridiculous, the eggs are impossible to hatch (well at least me) I believe the eggs we were sent were duds to be honest, But idk

Yes that is the exact same kit I bought. Darn it all!!!! They are so beautiful. I wonder if they are always that colour, from that supplier? They aren't green on the package, I was expecting reddish or peachy ones from the look of the envelope. I know it's not the food because I had the same food and nobody turned green. Even before I saw yours were green I had the question of whether they were always the same, which I why I started the Triassic Triops thread, (and also to get Carnifex to hydrate his) (only to find none of his nor mine would hatch!) I did get a few hatchlings earlier but none survived, and most of the eggs were duds it appears. Still trying...

Your clip was great, stop saying you don't have skills :)

Well Ducky, I contacted the customer support for triops.com and they are sending me more eggs for free since mine failed to hatch. Give it a go! e-mail them and let them know yours didnt hatch either :P MAYBE it was just a failed generation of egg layers that produced garbage-eggs hahaha

I got my kit like a month and a half ago from the Museum of Nature and Science (Fair Park) in Dallas, Texas. It was the last package.

They were more silvery translucent when they were younger. The bluish-green color started setting in when they were around ten days old -- about the time when they started developing egg pouches (adulthood?).

Bubble Head has been seriously stunted in her growth and only now, after at least 4 or 5 successful moltings, is she starting to show a hint of coloring. Her four surviving sisters are all at least twice her size. Of the four two are darker colored. After every molting the color is a bit lighter, but then darkens again over time.

Here are some pics I took yesterday (camera on automatic, with flash -- I ain't my girfriend... ;) ):

Posted Image
Typical. The two lighter colored indentations next to the face-mask actually turn bright pink right after molting. That is how I know which one just molted if I didn't see the action.

Bubble Head. Only now with a very light coloring on her face. Her carapace is less elongated, too. If it wasn't for the wardrobe malfunction, I'd almost think she could be a different species...

Here the light colored spots next to the face-mask are clearly visible.

Ducky,

After I moved over the younglings to my first tank setup, I dried out the hatching container, collected the detritus and whatever else was in there and put it back in the little plastic pill box it came in (which, btw, states 03/10 triops.com USA). It likely has unhatched eggs in it. PM me your address and I will send it to you.

I am also looking at four square feet of sand, drying on my bedroom floor. I want to get the eggs out once it is dry. No clue yet on how to go about that, though. When I do get a bunch, I would love to trade for T. Cancriformis and T. L. black beauties.

Nice pics as well Willem.

Interesting indeed the colours.
Maybe even in one package there can be several series of triops as they maybe are gathered in big numers and containers? So not all deposited by the same group and at different times? Who will tell.

Only if you get them form individuals they may be able to tell all eggs are from one group/time.
